Degussa’s Acematt® Silicas

For more than 40 years, Degussa has served the coating industry with matting agents based on synthetic silicas. Since that time, Degussa AG has met the constantly growing demands on this application with intensive research. For this purpose, a series of new products with specific properties have been developed. The increasing demand for matted coating systems, be it for reasons of fashion or to increase safety by eliminating gloss or for general product improvement, has resulted in the targeted development of silicas, which are used to matt surfaces. For the coating industry, Degussa AG offers various matting agents, which have carried the trade name ACEMATT® since 1995. Depending on the production process, the following nomenclature was chosen: T stands for thermal silicas, H stands for precipitated silicas from the aqueous phase (hydro = water), O stands for surface-treated products, K stands for Kieselsäure (silica), and S stands for silica in the case of ACEMATT® TS 100. Fundamental Requirements for Matting Agents include the following: ready dispersibility, good suspension behavior in the liquid coating, use in almost all coating systems, high matting power with small amounts added, straightforward adjustment of any desired degree of matting, little influence on rheologic properties, production of coating surfaces that are insensitive to mechanical and chemical stress, high transparency of the coating, consistent quality, and chemically inert.
